At Conservation Connect Films, we believe conservation storytelling must be collaborative, ethical, and grounded in trust. As filmmakers working closely with communities, conservationists, and ecosystems across Southern Africa, our work is rooted in a participatory model that prioritises authentic representation and shared ownership of stories.

We don’t just film stories - we co-create them.

Participatory Filmmaking in Practice

Our approach is guided by a strong commitment to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), authenticity, and co-production with the people whose lives, landscapes, and cultures we document.

  • Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC):
We engage early and transparently with individuals and communities before filming begins. Consent is never assumed. We ensure everyone involved understands how footage will be used and retains the right to withdraw at any point. Consent is revisited as the project evolves.

  • Co-Production and Shared Narrative:
We collaborate closely with community members, conservation partners, and local leaders to shape the direction of each film. Where possible, we invite participation in scripting, narration, and editorial feedback - ensuring the final story is not about them, but with them.

  • Authentic, Respectful Storytelling:
Our films reflect the real and often complex dynamics of conservation and community life. We avoid over-sensationalising or simplifying narratives. Instead, we embrace nuance and truth, celebrating lived experience with empathy and integrity.

  • Ethical Responsibility:
As visual storytellers in sensitive environments, we follow a code of conduct that safeguards both human and ecological wellbeing. From not disturbing wildlife to being mindful of cultural sensitivities, we strive to be invisible where necessary, and accountable always.

Why This Matters

Participatory filmmaking helps strengthen trust, deepen engagement, and foster long-term impact. By creating space for communities to be seen, heard, and respected on their own terms, we help conservation stories reach global audiences with honesty and heart - amplifying not just awareness, but agency.
